THE MISSION SERIES:
VERNAN KEE

Weston x Smartwool x Natives Outdoors

We've teamed up with Vernan Kee, Smartwool and Natives Outdoors to channel thousands of years of Navajo mountain vibes into a single collection of skis, snowboards and socks.

The collaboration celebrates indigenous art and supports the Wood For Life Tribal Fuelwood Initiative through the National Forest Foundation.

“The speed and precise movements of skiers and snowboarders reminds me of red-tailed hawks.”

THE FLIGHT OF THE RED-TAILED HAWK

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Meet Vernan Kee; a Native American from the Navajo Nation, a US Marine Corps Veteran, Graphic Designer, and VanLife dog dad. Through exploring a deep connection with Mother Nature, Vernan has been able to overcome many life challenges and past struggles due to trauma. Nowadays, he focuses his time and energy educating others about traditional native lands, to respect these sacred places and to be a positive influence for the next generation.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

“Feathers of the Red-tailed Hawk are used in ceremonies by Navajo medicine men and the bird is respected and honored by the Navajo People. Also known for being fast and precise, their feathers were tied to arrows so they flew true without mistakes. The speed and precise movements of skiers/snowboarders reminded me of Red-tailed hawks soaring down to catch prey.”

WOOD FOR LIFE

Vernan has spent many years helping transport wood to and around his community on the Navajo reservation, which is why Wood for Life Tribal Fuelwood Initiative hits home for him. This program helps responsibly utilize small diameter timber from forest restoration programs to help provide fuel for stoves and heat on indigenous reservations. In honor of this collection, Smartwool and Weston Backcountry will each be donating to the National Forest Foundation to support Wood for Life.
